PIG IRON
Pig Iron is a the Fe-C Alloys in which besides carbon (3.5%-4.5%) it has oher elements like Silicon, Manganese, Sulphur, Phosphorus. Pig iron is pure form of Fe (Iron) input in Steel making as it does not contain unwanted / harmful impurities as in case of ferrous scrap. Its low meting temperature and faster melting also help in alloy steel making. It is widely accepted by most of the customer across India and world over the years as a preferred source of raw material for Steel / Cast Iron making.
- Pig iron is used for Steel making in Arc Furnaces, Foundries, Alloy making, in automotive castings, and other iron based castings.
- In western India in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan it is extensively used in foundries for CI parts in Autmobile Industry, Motor body and engineering components in Engineering Industries, in Pumps industries, in Agriculture components, in pipe and fitting and in Steel making for alloys steel etc.
- In central India it is extensively used in Steel & Alloys making like ingot & billets, in automobile industry and in miscellaneous engineering industry.
- In Northern India it is extensively in foundries for CI parts in Automobile Industry, Motor body and engineering components in Engineering Industries, in Pumps industries, in Agriculture components, in pipe and fitting and in Steel making for alloys steel etc.
SPONGE IRON
Direct reduced iron (DRI), also called sponge iron is produced from the direct reduction of iron ore (in the form of lumps, pellets, or fines) into iron by a reducing gas or elemental carbon produced from natural gas or coal. Many ores are suitable for direct reduction. The direct reduction process is comparatively energy efficient. Steel made using DRI requires significantly less fuel, in that a traditional blast furnace is not needed. DRI is most commonly made into steel using electric arc furnaces to take advantage of the heat produced by the DRI product.
Benefits Of Sponge Iron
- The sponge iron is a superior substitute of steel scrap for steelmaking through the EAF/IF courses.
- Sponge Iron has a low sulfur substance. The DRI procedure can utilize poor quality coal that is inadmissible for ordinary iron making.
- A sponge iron has an indistinguishable iron content from the pig iron. Thus it is a great feedstock for the electric furnaces utilized by smaller factories. It enables them to use lower grades of scrap for whatever remains of the charge or to create higher grades of steel.
Applications Of Sponge Iron
- Sponge iron is a standout amongst the most imperative and the fundamental raw material. It is essential for the generation of different steel/iron based items like TMT bars, D.I Pipes and so forth.
- Sponge Iron is a part that substitutes for steel scrap and thus is necessary for assembling steel through induction furnaces and electric arc furnaces.
- Steel-melting scrap is essential and acts as a feed material in all mini steel plants that uses this piece for dissolving in electric arc furnace/induction furnace to fabricate steel.
- Sponge Iron is likewise an appropriate material as it acts as a coolant in LD converters of the Integrated Steel Plants.
